A personal banker’s role is to help customers with their complex banking needs. They therefore process new accounts (opening and closing), cross-sell products and services and perform clerical duties at the bank. Personal bankers are also required to contribute to the bank’s growth by maintaining excellent customer relations. On the other hand, they must be knowledgeable and skilled in handling vaults, safe deposit boxes, tellers as well as discussing or accepting credit applications. It is also the duty of a personal banker to provide support and leadership to new staff and be part of a team.

Primary Responsibilities of a personal banker

  • Listening to customers’ issues and also asking questions to get more information the customers’ needs
  • Helping the customers to choose the right banking product or service
  • Ensuring that the customer gets products and services that met their financial needs and preferences
  • Referring customers to other departments if necessary
  • A personal banker is tasked with developing real rapport with customers to gain their trust and confidence thus ensuring they are served better
  • Running and updating accounts using a computer
  • Providing exceptional customer services ranging from issuance of receipts to payment of cash (under the direct supervision)
  • Following the banks existing policies and code of conduct
  • Selling and preparing bank-to-bank wires, certificates of deposit, money orders, savings bonds, cashier’s checks and travelers’ checks
  • Cross-selling of bank new product and services as well as processing cash advances, wired transfers and Western Union
  • Attending trade fairs, sponsored classes or workshops as the bank deems fit
  • Performing other duties as instructed by supervisors to enhance service delivery

Academic Requirements of a Personal Banker

  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Additional qualification like a college diploma, associate degree or bachelor’s degree in relevant disciplines is preferred but not mandatory

Experience

  • Should have sales experience and 1-2 years teller experience
  • 3-5 years of on-job experience improves one’s chances of getting promotion (to Branch Manager, Financial Advisor or Loan Officer)
  • Minimum of 6 months cash handling experience is preferred
  • Must be an adult (At least 18 years old)
  • Passing a drug test may be required in some companies

Skills and Abilities

  • Must be a team player and someone who can easily get along with other staff .
  • Must be highly adaptive and dynamic in order to work in the evenings, during holidays or even weekends
  • Schedules are prepared based on business need and subject to change at any time.
  • Must have trunk strength and static strength since the job involves standing or walking for longer periods
  • Must be capable of working in a high volume, demanding and noisy environment
  • Must be computer literate and be able to operate  most of the office machinery

Like any other banking job, a personal banker must be competent and accurate. Employers should therefore look for result-oriented applicants who meet the academic requirements. Most importantly, candidates with experience in receiving cash and checks for deposit and account verification should be given the first priority. The recruiting financial institution should also give preference to candidates with multitasking, high adaptability and strong interpersonal skills as these are what will determine the effectiveness of a personal banker when carrying their responsibilities.
