Sales managers usually oversee sales that result from a company’s products and services. The manager is usually the head of the entire sales department in a particular region or geographical area. In this capacity, sales managers ensure constant and profitable growth in sales and company revenue. They achieve this by enforcing positive planing and managing of sales personnel. In addition, sales managers usually identify opportunities, lay out objectives, plan strategies and take action to achieve short and long term sales goals

Core Functions of a Sales Manager

  • Develop effective training programs, seminars and workshops to educate sales teams as well as equip them with relevant marketing skills to boost company sales.
  • Sales managers are also tasked with the responsibility of deploying sales representatives in the assigned area in order to maximize outreach to potential customers. They also hold regular meetings with sales staff to follow up on work results as well as review revenue objectives and sales strategies.
  • Manage the assigned geographic sales area for a product line or service and exploit the targeted market to meet the set revenue objectives or reach maximum sales
  • Work with marketing professionals and company executives to establish control budgets for sales and promotion ventures
  • Collaborate with company executives to establish the most realistic sales strategies for achieving the set revenue goals
  • Recommending fair sales prices after analyzing business operating costs, current market prices, competition as well as the supply and demand chain for products and services
  • Monitoring sales progress as well as analyzing trends and results in order to come up with sales strategies that maximize revenue generation for the company
  • Achieve forecasted sales objectives by following the company’s plan of action or sales strategies
  • Identify opportunities to capitalize on and increase company sales
  • Draft sales policies, practices and procedures that benefit both customers and the company.
  • Analyze results and accurately forecast monthly, quarterly, and annual revenue figures for the company or business
  • Educate sales teams about developing a professional rapport with customers  in order to maintain long term clients
  • Help sales teams to create a supportive working environment where everyone embraces a collective team effort to achieve sales objectives. This role also involves coaching and motivating sales agents to perform well on the job.

Skills and Competencies of a Sales Manager

  •  The incumbent must have a university degree in marketing or business administration.
  • He/she should have good analytical skills to interpret sales performance and market trends
  • Interested applicants for the sales manager job should have excellent oral and written communication skills as they will be required to report about sales performance and interact with other employees on a regular basis
  • Ability to motivate, coach and lead sales teams to reach the company’s sales forecast
  • The incumbent must be a leader and a team player since the job involves overseeing sales employees within the company
